Why do tree growth rings have varying widths? |
|
As a tree ages, cells divide and multiply, the trunk grows wider and growth
rings are formed. A wide growth ring indicates a year when conditions were
favorable promoting fast growth. Conversely, a narrow growth ring shows
that growth was stunted by a year of inclement weather-a cold summer or
drought. Growth rings are a valuable source of information about the natural
environment in the past and are often used in scientific research. |

Do trees have beneficial effects on human health? |
|
Since the 1970s, recuperative nature retreats to forest areas have been
popular forms of recreation in Japan. The distinctive aromas produced in
forests by fallen leaves, various flora and fauna and trees themselves
are regarded as having beneficial effects on human respiratory and nervous
systems as well as on blood circulation, and are used within courses of
health treatment in clinics in Russia and Europe. |
